Get to know your hosts:

Anglers Edge Adventures is owned & operated by Cody and Tanya Sewell of Kamiah, Idaho. We grew up with the Clearwater River in our backyard and have always been passionate about fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation. We have taken our knowledge and success as a big game outfitter along the Selway River in Idaho and applied it to Anglers Edge Adventures to guarantee a top-quality fishing trip with a professional guide in our fully equipped drift boats. We strive for excellence in customer service and performance and always go above & beyond to provide you with a memorable trip.

Steelhead in hands

About Steelhead

  • The Steelhead of Idaho typically spend the first part of their lives in freshwater, then migrate out to the ocean where they grow to adulthood.
  • In their younger days, they are an important food source for many including, birds, bears, otters and even seals, sea lions and orcas.
  •  Steelhead normally weigh between 8-11 pounds and grow to about 24” in length. The Steelhead in the Clearwater River Valley can grow in excess of 35 pounds and a length of 45”!
  • Steelhead trout here in Idaho are the same species as rainbow trout but, live completely different lifestyles?
  • Steelhead can be grouped into winter and summer “runs”, depending on when the adults return to fresh water.
  • Steelhead trout are Anadromous, meaning they spend a large part of their life migrating to and from the Clearwater River Valley and the ocean.
  • Steelhead are unlike Salmon, as they may spawn several times before they die.
  • Young Steelhead feed primarily on zooplankton. Adults will feed on insects, mollusks and crustaceans, fish eggs and small fish (even other trout!)
  • There are some Steelhead that will stay in freshwater and never migrate to the ocean. These fish are commonly referred to as “resident” trout. There are times that the offspring of “resident” trout become Steelhead and head for the ocean!
  • Steelhead are often referred to as “fish of a thousand casts” because they’re so hard to catch.
